The L3Harris Family Medical Center (L3HFMC) opened in 1997 originally to serve Harris employees, retirees and their dependents. The company-sponsored center was the creation of Medical Technology Transfer Corporation to provide a wide range of outpatient health care services, at one location, that exceed the quality of and access to care provided by the local medical community.
In the L3HFMC model of care, primary care physicians are the patient’s principal care provider. These physicians become partners with their patients by coordinating and facilitating care and helping them navigate the complex and often confusing health care system. Rather than being a “gatekeeper” who restricts access to care and services, the L3HFMC physician is the “gateway” to the medical system. Their focus is on maximizing the health status of their patients, not just treating the sick.
L3HFMC patients have enhanced access to care by their primary care physician including extended office hours, same day appointments, and the use of email and telephone for “virtual visits”. L3Harris physicians are paid for performance, not on a fee for service basis. The payment structure is explicitly intended to provide compensation for comprehensive, coordinated care and to reward high quality, cost effective care.
In 2017, based on L3HFMC’s model of care that puts patients at the forefront, the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) officially designated L3HFMC as a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH). This designation is given only to facilities that meet the rigorous standards and criteria established by the NCQA.
